Ways to Curb Insecurities in the Country

One recent survey showed that 64 percent of Kenyans rate insecurity as their greatest concern; much higher than unemployment, lack of proper housing, water, and sanitation. Nairobi   City for example is the leading City in insecurities. Personally, too, this is an issue that is very close to my heart, as a resident of Nairobi, a parent, and a businessman. It does not matter where we live in the city – from the so-called leafy city suburbs to the informal settlements often referred to as slums – but the question of security is always in our minds. Insecurity creates unnecessary anxiety, and high levels of uncertainty and distorts the cost of doing business in any part of the country.

1.Understanding the Root Causes of Insecurity

To create effective solutions to insecurity, it is important to first and foremost understand the root causes. Majority of the insecurity plaguing the country can be contributed by various factors. These include weak local governance, economic inequality, and the rise of organized crime and terrorism. Taking a closer look at each of these factors we gain a better understanding of how each contribute to the issue of insecurity in the Country. Firstly, weak local governance and corruption are major factors that contribute to insecurity in the Country. Due to the limited government presence and lack of rule of law, many citizens feel unsafe and are unable to access essential services such as health care and education. In fact, in a survey conducted in 2018, 70% of Kenyans reported that crime had increased in their country over the past year. This is partly due to the fact that many citizens are unable to access law enforcement officials, who are often corrupt and lack the resources to carry out effective investigations. Weak local governance also contributes to insecurity in Kenya by inhibiting the economic growth of the country. Due to corruption, the country is unable to provide quality services and create jobs for its citizens. Due to the extreme disparity between rich and poor citizens, many people experience feelings of injustice and lack of access to services, which can lead to criminal activity and make them more vulnerable to being involved in violent acts.

2.Enhancing Security Infrastructure

Another solution to insecurity in Kenya is to enhance security infrastructure such as roads, railways, and airports. Investing in repairs to improve the safety of roadways and railways, the installation of safety systems, and the construction of new airports. Such infrastructural improvements would make travel in Kenya safer for both citizens and tourists, and would improve economic productivity. It is also important to improve the communication and energy infrastructure in order to make the country safer and more secure. This can be done by investing in the construction of modern communication systems such as fiber optic cables and internet towers. By adding more energy capacity, we avoid shortages and outages. Lastly, it is important to protect our water and food supply in order to make the country safer. This can be done by investing in the construction of more water supply systems and food processing plants, and by investing in the development of new technologies that can protect water and food supplies from contamination and damage.

3.Strengthening the Role of the Police and Security Forces

Another solution to insecurity is strengthening the role of the police and security forces. In order to do so, it is important to invest in the training of police officers and provide them with the resources they need to carry out their job effectively. Police officers should also further their studies in security courses. Recruiting more police officers, particularly women officers, in order to increase the rate of female participation in the force is very important. Furthermore, police officers should be held accountable for their actions in order to make the force more reliable. One way to do this is to establish independent police oversight bodies, such as human rights commissions, and create laws to penalize corrupt officers. Strengthening the role of the police help in implementing community policing strategies.

4.Improving Education and Job Opportunities

Improving education and job opportunities for youth is another solution to insecurity in the Country. By investing in youth initiatives and providing youth with access to quality education and job opportunities, many will be able to lead productive lives and make positive contributions to the country. One important way to improve education and job opportunities for youth is to provide more opportunities for higher education. This can be done by expanding the number of scholarships and increasing the number of free public universities in the country. Expanding vocational training programs and providing youth with access to apprenticeships is also another way of improving education and job opportunities.
